Pieces of a Man is een (auto)biografische monoloog over David Labi’s overleden vader, Marcello: een Libische Jood die als kind het concentratiekamp Bergen-Belsen overleefde, opgroeide in Israël en zich later vestigde in Londen. Marcello bracht levenslange verwondering, waanzin, vreugde en pijn voor de mensen om hem heen.
Pieces of a Man duikt in verschuivend verleden en een parallel heden met foto’s, clips van Marcello’s getuigenis over de Holocaust, anekdotes over soldaten, gangsters en casino’s… en vijf kostbare voorwerpen, die David op de een of andere manier verloor.
Vanuit een persoonlijke invalshoek raakt deze monoloog aan universele thema’s als identiteit, vervolging en gedwongen migratie, terwijl noties van mannelijkheid in twijfel worden getrokken. Het is een interactieve, multidisciplinaire solovoorstelling die balanceert tussen stand-up comedy, dramatische monoloog en auto-ethnografie. De voorstelling nodigt het publiek uit om na te denken over hun eigen onopgeloste ouderlijke problemen – met plezier.
De verhalen van vader en zoon omspannen onvoorstelbare conflicten en duizelingwekkende sociale veranderingen.
David Labi is een in Londen geboren verhalenverteller. Hij woonde in Buenos Aires, Tokio, Berlijn en nu in België. Met zijn agentschap Good Point helpt hij ngo’s en cause-driven campagnes mensen te bereiken met empathie en creativiteit. Zijn artistieke reis loopt via workshops en experience design, tijdschriftredactie, tv-nieuws scriptschrijven, filmmaken, literaire vertaling, copywriting,… en sinds 2021 zet hij de eerste stappen richting performance theater.
Geïnspireerd door de positieve reacties op Pieces of a man, ontwikkelt David een workshop “ouderlijk vertellen”. In deze participatieve vorm werkt hij met mensen aan de verhalen die we onszelf vertellen over onze ouders, en hoe we die kunnen “herschrijven” om vreedzamere samenlevingen op te bouwen.

Pieces of a Man is an (auto)biographical monologue about David Labi’s late father, Marcello: a Libyan Jew who survived Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as a child prisoner, grew up in Israel and later settled in London. Marcello brought lifelong wonder, madness, joy and pain to those around him.
Pieces of a Man delves into shifting pasts and a parallel presents with photographs, clips of Marcello’s testimony about the Holocaust, anecdotes about soldiers, gangsters, and casinos… and five precious objects, which David somehow lost.
From a personal angle, this monologue touches on universal themes such as identity, persecution, and forced migration, while questioning notions of masculinity. It is an interactive, multidisciplinary solo show balancing between stand-up comedy, dramatic monologue, and autoethnography. It invites audiences to reflect upon their own unresolved parental issues – with joy.
The stories of father and son span unimaginable conflict and vertiginous social change.
David Labi is a London-born storyteller. He has lived in Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Berlin and now in Belgium. With his agency Good Point, he helps NGOs and cause-driven campaigns reach people with empathy and creativity. His artistic journey runs through workshops and experience design, magazine editing, TV news scriptwriting, filmmaking, literary translation, copywriting,… and since 2021 he has been taking first steps towards performance theatre.
Inspired by the positive response to Pieces of a man, David is developing a “parental storytelling” workshop. In this participatory format, he works with people on the stories we tell ourselves about our parents, and how we can “re-author” them to build more peaceful societies.
