Als je durft, drijf ik dichterbij.

Er zijn meer mensen mét dan zónder thalassofobie; angst voor de diepzee. Geen zicht op de bodem, niet weten wat er onder je leeft, veel te ver weg van land: ondraaglijk, dat grote onbekende. Tenminste, dat leren we te geloven.

Als Anne in een pashokje staat om diens eerste binder te kopen, ontstaat het alter ego Leo: een masculiene versie van zichzelf die er altijd al was, maar nu ineens naar buiten komt. De ene dag voelt Anne zich Leo, de andere dag Kate. Maar hoe leg je dat uit als je jezelf nog niet eens snapt, en de rest van de wereld lijdt aan die thalassofobie? Moet je jezelf eigenlijk wel uitleggen?

LEO is een zoektocht naar gender, drag, identiteit, queer-zeedieren, een dobberend hoofd en onze allesomvattende angst voor het onbekende.

LEO is een genuanceerd-activistische solovoorstelling over wat het betekent om een zoektocht naar je eigen genderidentiteit aan te gaan; een reis die voert langs de alg die het begin van het leven op aarde aankondigt tot de gender-affirming-shop om de hoek. Maar LEO is vooral: een uitnodiging om die zoektocht te vieren. Want als er één ding is dat Anne opmerkt tijdens diens eigen tocht: ondanks het feit dat afwijken van de gendernorm de nodige hobbels met zich meebrengt, is het vooral een feest om te ontdekken wie je allemaal kan zijn en al bent. Via persoonlijke verhalen, filosofische overwegingen, maatschappelijke reflecties en dragking-acts komt Anne Kuit met LEO tot een theatraal pleidooi voor meer queer-joy en gendereuforie.

Anne Kuit, zij/die, is theatermaker en –docent, (educatief) programmamaker, schrijver, queer, regelteef en taalliefhebber. In 2019 rondde die de opleiding Docent Theater op ArtEZ in Arnhem (NL) af. Anders dan de naam van deze opleiding doet vermoeden studeerde ze niet alleen af als docent, maar ook als theatermaker, productieleider, dramaturg, gespreksleider, zakelijk assistent, regisseur, schrijver en speler. “Oftewel; ‘een artistieke en educatieve duizendpoot’, zoals we dat altijd noemden”. Zelf maken en spelen doet Anne al zo lang die zich kan herinneren. Met het project LEO neemt ze de stap om het eigen makerschap te ontwikkelen, al strijdend voor een verdraagzame wereld.

Anne woont in Gent en werkt als theaterdocent bij o. a. KOPERGIETERY (BE) en Wisper (BE), als artistiek assistent van schrijver en theatermaker Marjolijn van Heemstra (NL), als educatiemedewerker bij Ulrike Quade Company (NL) en Sadettin K (NL), als schrijfdocent bij Creatief Schrijven (BE) en als gespreksleider bij Theater Rotterdam (NL). Daarnaast geeft die trainingen aan organisaties over seksuele- en genderdiversiteit en genderinclusieve communicatie.

If you dare, I will float closer.

There are more people with thalassophobia than without; fear of the deep sea. No sight of the bottom, not knowing what lives below you, far too far from land: unbearable, that great unknown. At least, that is what we are taught to believe.

When Anne is in a fitting room buying their first binder, the alter ego Leo emerges: a masculine version of theirself that has always been there, but now suddenly comes out. One day Anne feels like Leo, the next Kate. But how do you explain that when you don’t even understand yourself yet, and the rest of the world suffers from thalassophobia? Do you really need to explain yourself?

LEO is a quest for gender, drag, identity, queer sea creatures, a bobbing head and our all-encompassing fear of the unknown.

LEO is a nuanced activist solo performance about what it means to embark on a quest for your own gender identity; a journey that leads from the alg that announces the beginning of life on earth to the gender-affirming shop around the corner. But LEO is above all: an invitation to celebrate that quest. Because if there is one thing that Anne notices during their own journey: despite the fact that deviating from the gender norm entails the necessary bumps, it is above all a celebration to discover who you can be and already are. Through personal stories, philosophical considerations, social reflections and drag performances, Anne Kuit makes with LEO a theatrical plea for more queer joy and gender euphoria.

Anne Kuit, she/they, is a theatre maker and teacher, (educational) programme maker, writer, queer and language lover. In 2019 they have completed the Teacher of Theatre programme at ArtEZ in Arnhem (NL). Contrary to what the name of this course suggests, she did not only graduate as a teacher, but also as a theatre maker, production manager, dramaturge, discussion leader, business assistant, director, writer and actor. “In other words: ‘an artistic and educational jack-of-all-trades’, as we used to say”. Anne has been creating and performing for as long as she can remember. With the LEO project, she will be developing her own creation, while fighting for a more tolerant world.

Anne lives in Ghent and works as a theatre teacher at KOPERGIETERY (BE) and Wisper (BE), as artistic assistant to writer and theatre maker Marjolijn van Heemstra (NL), as education officer at Ulrike Quade Company (NL) and Sadettin K (NL), as writing teacher at Creatief Schrijven (BE) and as discussion leader at Theater Rotterdam (NL). She also gives training to organisations on sexual and gender diversity and gender-inclusive communication.
