Rubin Ajlouni breathes life into the monologue “Jasser”, written by Abdelkader Benali in 2001. By setting the play in a contemporary context and interweaving the changes that Palestine has undergone in the last two decades, the Palestinian actor playing the role of Shylock, a Jewish merchant, ponders what it means to take on this part after twenty years. Ajlouni reflects on the significance of Yasser Arafat’s passing for the Palestinian cause and his own perception of this leader, who was once seen as a liberator of Palestine.
Through his portrayal, Ajlouni aims to illustrate with JASSER how the situation in Palestine has evolved and how it continues to impact the daily lives of Palestinian citizens. He hopes that this performance will inspire the audience to speak out on this issue and work towards a better future for all involved parties. For Ajlouni, this performance is also a personal journey of self-discovery, where he confronts his own identity and proudly proclaims, “this is me”.
Rubin Ajlouni was born in the Netherlands and has had a passion for theatre since the age of 17. In 2019, he performed in the junior show XXX Jr. at ITA and was a member of DeGasten theatre collective before enrolling in De nieuwe spelers preliminary training programme. Rubin attended drama at Luca School Of Arts for a year and appeared in Funeral by Ontroerend Goed.

In deze uitvoering brengt Rubin Ajlouni de monoloog “Jasser” tot leven. Geschreven door Abdelkader Benali in 2001, plaatst Ajlouni het stuk in een hedendaagse setting, waarin de veranderingen van de afgelopen 20 jaar in Palestina zijn verweven. Als palestijnse acteur in de rol van Shylock, de Joodse koopman, vraagt Ajlouni zich af hoe het is om deze rol na 20 jaar te spelen. Wat heeft de dood van Yasser Arafat betekend voor de Palestijnse zaak en hoe kijkt hij nu naar deze leider, die Palestina zou bevrijden?
Met de monoloog JASSER wil Ajlouni het publiek laten zien hoe de situatie in Palestina is veranderd en hoe dit het dagelijks leven van Palestijnse burgers beïnvloedt. Hij hoopt dat deze voorstelling het publiek zal aanmoedigen om zich uit te spreken over deze kwestie en bij te dragen aan een betere toekomst voor alle betrokken partijen. Voor Ajlouni is het ook een zoektocht naar zijn eigen identiteit, waarbij hij zichzelf recht in de ogen wil kunnen kijken en wil laten zien: “dit ben ik”. Dit is een persoonlijke reis die hij vaak heeft vermeden en nu volledig omarmt.
Rubin Ajlouni werd geboren in Nederland en woont vandaag in Antwerpen. Sinds zijn 17de is hij gefascineerd door theater. In Nederland was hij te zien bij ITA in de junior voorstelling XXX Jr. (2019), hij behoorde tot een theatercollectief DeGasten en volgde verschillende cursussen alvorens zich in 2019 in te schrijven voor de vooropleiding van De Nieuwe Spelers. Rubin volgde een jaar drama aan Luca School Of Arts en was te zien in Funeral van Ontroerend Goed.
