Almokdad seeks insights and addresses the grey zone between wars in the present and the past. A simultaneously gloomy, neutral, detailed, and flat image of devastation. An exploration of life through the ritual celebration of death.
Unfolding The Body. “The Trojan Women”: does not focus on the emotional impact of disaster images. Eyas Almokdad, takes it further and digs into the memories of both the space and the dismantled bodies, the individuals who once inhabited the ruins, and taps into the collective memory of war victims.
Eyas Almokdad is a Syrian Belgian multidisciplinary artist. A filmmaker and choreographer with a bachelor in ballet and modern dance (The Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts Damascus – Syria 2005), a master in audiovisual arts (Transmedia, Multimedia Arts, Art and Technology Luca School of Arts – Brussels 2013), and a master in audiovisual arts (Film/KASK – Ghent 2021).
Almokdad made various fiction and documentary films about: the war and revolution in Syria and the political and humanitarian aspects of immigration. Through narratives and magical elements of reality, his films address contemporary human issues. His choreographies attempt to comprehend the extent of human suffering and bring images of war victims to the scene. Through experiment, ritual theatre, dance and new media, he voices the natural and the politicised postmodern body.

Unfolding The Body. “The Trojan Women”: wil het niet hebben over de emotionele impact van rampbeelden. Eyas Almokdad, gaat verder en graaft in de herinneringen van zowel de ruimte als de ontmantelde lichamen – de individuen die ooit de ruïnes bewoonden – en boort het collectieve geheugen van oorlogsslachtoffers aan. Op zoek naar inzichten, pakt Almokdad de grijze zone tussen oorlogen, vroeger en nu, aan. Een tegelijk somber, neutraal, gedetailleerd en vlak beeld van de verwoesting. Een onderzoek naar het leven via de rituele viering van de dood.

Almokdad realiseerde verschillende fictie- en documentaire films over de oorlog en revolutie in Syrië en over de politieke en humanitaire aspecten van immigratie. Via verhalende en magische elementen van de werkelijkheid kaart hij in zijn films hedendaagse menselijke kwesties aan. Zijn choreografieën trachten de omvang van het menselijk lijden te doorgronden en te vertalen naar de scène. Via experiment, ritueel theater, dans en nieuwe media spreekt hij over het natuurlijke en het gepolitiseerde postmoderne lichaam.

Unfolding The Body. “The Trojan Women”: n’est pas axé sur la dimension émotionnelle associée aux images de catastrophes.. Eyas Almokdad est allé plus loin. Il explore plutôt les souvenirs de l’espace et des corps démontés, des individus qui ont habité les ruines, et puise dans la mémoire collective des victimes de la guerre.
Almokdad cherche à comprendre et aborde cette zone grise entre les guerres, dans le présent et dans le passé. Une image à la fois sombre, neutre, détaillée et plate de la dévastation. Une réflexion sur la vie à travers la célébration rituelle de la mort.
Eyas Almokdad est un artiste multidisciplinaire Syro-Belge. Cinéaste et chorégraphe, il est diplômé en ballet et danse moderne (The Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts Damascus – Syrie 2005), titulaire d’un master en arts audiovisuels (Transmedia, Multimedia Arts, Art and Technology Luca School of Arts – Bruxelles 2013) et d’un master en arts audiovisuels (Film/KASK – Gand 2021).
Almokdad a réalisé plusieurs films fictionnels et documentaires sur la guerre et la révolution en Syrie et sur les aspects politiques et humanitaires de l’immigration. En utilisant des narratifs et des éléments magiques de la réalité, ses films abordent des questions humaines contemporaines. Ses chorégraphies tentent de comprendre l’étendue de la souffrance humaine et mettent en scène des images de victimes de guerre. En expérimentant, par le théâtre rituel, la danse et les arts médiatiques, il exprime le corps naturel et le corps politisé de la postmodernité.
