NL// WHAT SHE SAID onderzoekt de positie van de vrouw in een patriarchale samenleving. Vanuit live muziek, poëzie, dans en acteerwerk verkennen Nitish Kumar Bhardwaj en Lara Groeneweg de symboliek van de Ettuthokai, de acht bloemlezingen uit de Zuid-Indiase literatuur. Hierbij putten ze inspiratie uit de uitvoerige conventies en metaforen en bewerken ze de poëzie tot het verhaal dat ze willen vertellen. Deze Work In Progress nemen ze een verhaal uit Metamorfosen, over een waternimf, Scylla. In de toekomst willen ze met dit materiaal verder uitdiepen in Cilappatikaram, een epos uit de 5e eeuw.
Scylla haar verhaal is een spiegel voor de ravage die het patriarchaat aanricht bij vrouwen. What she said is een vertelling vanuit haar perspectief, in poëtische verzen en de scène een weerspiegeling van haar innerlijke wereld.
Een stap terug om opnieuw na te gaan hoe we verhalen vertellen, in een poging om de in stilte gedwongen levens te portretteren.

Nitish Kumar Bhardwaj is acteur, regisseur en schrijver van poëzie en theaterstukken. Hij studeerde multimedia en animatie waar hij onderzoek deed naar de antropologische benadering ‘rasā’ door middel van dramaturgie en hoe dit het publiek kan raken.
Zijn toneelstuk ‘Kalki Avtar Pe Mukadama’ won de nationale drama wedstrijd in Jaipur, Rajasthan. En een serie van zijn gedichten werden als boek uitgegeven door Chinmaya Gyanpeeth Publications, New Delhi. Nitish realiseerde een docudrama over milieu-educatie (University of Dayton). Daarnaast filmt en regisseert hij een docu over een dansproject van choreografe Jo-An Lauwaert. Verder schreef en regisseerde hij een kortfilm over depressie en de eindeloze eentonigheid van het leven, die dit jaar in première zal gaan. En een nummer dat hij componeerde vanuit zijn poëzie, wordt gebruikt in een bekroonde onafhankelijke speelfilm. Het verhaal over Scylla is een spiegel die de ravage weerspiegelt die het patriarchaat aanricht bij vrouwen. De vertelling is vanuit haar perspectief in poëtische verzen; en de scène een weerspiegeling van haar innerlijke wereld.
EN// WHAT SHE SAID researches the position of women in a patriarchal society. Through live music, poetry, dance and acting Nitish Kumar Bhardwaj and Lara Groeneweg explore the symbolism of the Ettuthokai, the eight anthologies of South Indian literature. Inspired by the elaborate conventions and metaphors they edit the poetry in a way it reflects the story they want to tell. This Work In Progress they selected a story from Metamorphoses, about a water nymph, Scylla. In the future they wish to work on Cilappatikaram, a 5th century epic.
Scylla’s story is a mirror that reflects the havoc the patriarchy causes on women. Storytelling from Scylla’s perspective in poetic verses; and a scene that reflects her inner world.
A step back to re-evaluate how stories are told, in an attempt to portrait the lifes forced into silence.

Nitish Kumar Bhardwaj is an actor, director and writer of poetry and theatre pieces. He studied multimedia and animation, he researched the anthropological approach to ‘rasā’ through dramaturgy and how this affects the audience.
His play ‘Kalki Avtar Pe Mukadama’ won the national drama competition in Jaipur, Rajasthan. And a series of his poems were published as a book by ‘Chinmaya Gyanpeeth Publications’, New Delhi. Nitish made a docudrama on environmental education, screened at the University of Dayton. He is also filming, editing and directing a documentary film on a dance project by choreographer Jo-An Lauwaert. He has written and directed a short film about depression and the unending monotonousness of life, which is going to premiere this year. A song which he has composed from his poetry, is used in an award winning independent feature film.
