Work In Progress: WIPCOOP 2023 – Ghent

Take a peek into Ghent’s creative kitchen. Join MAP and the Work In Progress Cooperative (Wipcoop) in Campo Victoria, where a lively array of works-in-progress are ready for your discovery. This year, Rodrigo Batista & Mariana Senne, Omar Cortagena, Lilieth Manjarres Acuña and Marios Bellas reveal what they are brooding on.

They will each present a maximum of 30 minutes from their WORK IN PROGRESS. Afterwards, they will enter into a 1-hour conversation with a company of dramaturgs, workshops, producers and programmers about the work shown and possible support. During these breaks, other artists talk about their work, new initiatives or projects in artist talks with the audience.

10:00 – 10:30 ♦ Work In Progress ♦ MARIOS BELLAS – VIER MUREN

Vier Muren (Four Walls) is a hip-hop ritual that creates space for the anger, fear, mourning, celebration and hope that comes with losing an old world and welcoming an unknown future. A bizarre musical mix of hip-hop mantras, slam choruses, screeching guitars, banging drums and freestyle prophecies.

Direction & lyrics: Marios Bellas – From & with: Alix Konadu, Arber Alijaj, Vianney Adriaens, Lois Brochez, Nouha Rannoun, Marios Bellas, Elric Reinartz, Jurian Reinartz – Coaching: Junior Mthombeni.

11:30 – 12:00 ♦ Work In Progress ♦ OMAR CORTEGANA – PEKE, ALLES WAAIT BETER MET UNA CANCIÓN.

Omar Cortegana is working on a theatre show for children and adults. The story follows the life of a Peruvian-Belgian family, told from the point of view of Peke and his father. They both face a new challenge and have to adjust to their new environment in Belgium. While Peke experiences his own adventures and struggles, his father assists him with the power of music. In the end, music proves to be the key in this phase of both their lives. Hopefully the wind will blow in their favour, because “Peke, alles waait beter met una canción”!

Direction & language consultant: Felien De Smedt – Play & creation: Jim Maes – Dramaturgy, music & acting: Omar Cortegana. With the support of: Mestizo Arts Plaform/WIPCOOP. With thanks to: Krakeel Theatre, At The Dirty Guests, The Centrale, Danspunt.

“Adiós” is a unique blend of traditional Caribbean dance and contemporary moves. The performance incorporates both classic Colombian rhythms and contemporary music, aiming to embrace the process of saying goodbye to a loved one. When it is impossible to say goodbye to a loved one, ‘Adios’ offers touching sentiments, nostalgic vibes and redemption.

In our imaginary world of neoliberal “freedom”, we are all held captive to some extent. But who or what is causing this? Rodrigo Batista dives into this contemporary issue and challenges, aiming to incorporate them into a mixtape. “KIDNAPPED” is a form of variety theatre: a unique mix of theatre, video, music, propaganda and tragedy, revealing fragments of political reality and the resulting realism. The audience is encouraged to “wake up” from secularised and contemporary hypnosis.

Concept: Rodrigo Batista – Performers: Mariana Senne & Rodrigo Batista – Outside eye: Joachim Robbrecht – Residencies: Studio Alta, wp Zimmer, workspacebrussels, With the support of Mestizo Arts Platform/WIPCOOP.

An excellent opportunity for art sector and public to get a glimpse of what is brewing and developing in terms of new artistic creations in the performing arts!

WIPCOOP – the Work In Progress Cooperative of Mestizo Arts Platform – has for many years been a unique collaboration in the arts sector in Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent, more recently in Mechelen and now also in Leuven.

Its main goal? Making new artistic work visible from the strength of the cooperative, setting up dialogue around it and matching artists and organisations to be able to further develop and play and spread this work when finished.

WIPCOOP = making space for new voices, stories, forms and languages in the performing arts. An inter-city co-production in which the arts sector keeps its finger on the pulse of what is developing in the rich breeding ground of our cities and a network in which artists find support in developing their work. A win-win, in other words.
