SHOWCASE: CAPRICCIOSA – Carla Parcianello

Constantly fluctuating between a socially accepted self-image and a caricature, Carla Parcianello takes you on a journey. From acceptance to transformation to the ultimate being: the Capricious.

The term Capricciosa (eng: capricious) means: unpredictable, unstable, impulsive and is usually negatively attributed to little girls in Western society. This solo project, inspired by Carla’s instantaneous drawings, depicts a grotesque feminine portrait, in which she explores her own personality flaws and redefines what it means to be a ‘good girl’. Through oblong shaped figures, she manipulates her physical forms and fights aggressive storms of birds (metaphorically the caprices).

Carla Parcianello is a dancer from Italy, now based in Belgium (Leuven). She has an urban dance background and embraces performative styles such as Waacking and footwork-based styles such as UK Jazz Fusion and House Dance. She is active in the ”urban dance battle” community and studied rudiments of contemporary dance (Gaga, Flying Low and Butoh).

Since 2020, her movement research has focused on defining a personal dance vocabulary by fusing her urban dance influences with contemporary dance languages. She explores the idea of spontaneity and how to achieve it in her movement. She integrates her passion for drawing and painting into her dance practice as a methodology. A series of improvised performances called Crude Studies and the solo performance Capricciosa are her first choreographic projects.
