2 days of theater, dance and multidisciplinary work in Arenberg

WIPCOOP ANTWERPEN Paula Kopczyk, Manu Moreau, Prince K. Appiah, Mohanad Mukhtar, Hüseyin Umaysiz, Roxette Chikua, Junior Akwety and artist collective e-c-h-e-l-o-n are showing up to 30 minutes of their Work In Progress at Arenberg during WIPCOOP Antwerp. Afterwards, they will enter into a dialogue with about 10 professionals about the further development of their work.

Paula Kopczyk – Survival in a Belgian town according to coach Paula K is a story about a Polish woman who has not lived in Belgium for very long. Soon, despite her good intentions, she finds herself in trouble. The way she handles that is surprising. Regardless of adversity, she has no problem with the world at all. Manu Moreau – [kni’bo]I’ve learned the most from all of the things you couldn’t teach me.” Manu wants to become a father, but he is almost 40 and single. With his drive for parenthood also comes the question of who he wants to be as a father. A monologue about a man who has had to find his own way with humor as a shield. Prince K. Appiah – THE BENCHCan a man be its own biggest enemy? Can a drive for something be so big that the car never starts moving in the first place?” Coincidental encounters on a bench turn out to be not so random after all. Mohanad Mukhtar – Happy B-Day is a children’s performance/installation about a boy celebrating his birthday for the first time in his life. This first time, unfortunately, he celebrates alone. The boy is very curious but also nervous about the party. How do you prepare for a birthday party? Especially, how do you do it, without parents and family around you. Roxette Chikua – Carpe Diem “L’amour est compliqué” What is the right relationship? How do you recognize the true one? Carpe Diem “L’amour est compliqué” is a dance performance about the process in the search for love. A dance performance in an afro-futuristic atmosphere, about the triangle: us, me and the other – placed in the(mathematical) Fibonacci series and inspired by the dance theory of Anne Theresa De Keersmaeker: repetition, tempo, time and circular movements. Junior Akwety – My House (working title) In My House, Junior Akwety creates committed, simple yet exciting choreography through music and dance that conveys dedicated artists’ love of the arts. Mixing house and dance with influences from Malian jazz and blues, he tells a passionate story, starting from a desire for expression and a look to the past. Junior Akwety is a singer, musician and producer who found a new language and challenge in acting through projects such as Rumble in da Jungle and L’Homme de la Mancha. Hüseyin Umaysiz – Sad Birds Pavilion based on Bahtiyar Ali’ s novel of the same name – takes you back to the past as well as the present. Sad Birds Pavilion follows the traces of a traditional Kurdish narrative and the musical beauty of the Kurdish language in a contemporary new form of expression. Stories of the present intertwine with the past. A journey in scents, sounds, time, colors, songs and body. Looking for lost tracks. Without fear. What makes us us?
