Colección. What is the link between the indigenous cultures of the Americas and Antwerp?

Since 2012, MESTIZO ARTS PLATFORM has been maintaining and renewing, The Altar of Antwerp: a participatory installation that invites us to reflect on the meaning of “what we lose” in the city. Since 2017, it has been part of the MAS’s permanent collection.

From the beginning, the installation is in a relationship of dialogue and tension with Dora and Paul Janssen Arts’ collection of pre-Columbian objects. Both tell about Latin America in different ways.

The 2020 Altar of Antwerp featured the performance “A Guide Through Time and Space. This was a tour of the Traditional Altar of Mexico, The Altar of Antwerp and the Dora and Paul Janssen Arts Collection from the perspective of six Belgian artists of Latin American origin.

From this experience emerges “Colección,” a series of videos that captures and preserves this experience. A reflection on the story of the ancestral cultures of Latin America. This collection is at the same time a question about what the collections are: what do they tell? What deserves to be preserved? How are objects and stories connected?
