Hedendaagse muurkunstenaars laten zich inspireren door het werk van Mexicaanse muralist Diego Rivera
Schone Kunsten of straattaal? Diego Rivera is een icoon. Zijn fresco’s en muurschilderingen vormen een centraal referentiepunt in de kunstgeschiedenis van de twintigste eeuw en maken deel uit van ons culturele canon. De hedendaagse kunstenaars en muralisten aan de andere kant, die de achtersteegjes en leegstaande gebouwen van onze steden verfraaien, bewegen zich in urban wasteland. Alsof ze steeds zoekende zijn naar een plek. Ze flirten met grenzen en bewegen zich in de schemerzone: hun werk krijgt door sommigen de vernietigende stempel !vandalisme! opgedrukt, terwijl anderen – modieuze galerijhouders, quoi? – hen met vijf sterren de hemel in prijzen. De kunstenaars vervlechten de taal van de straat met het discours van de cultuurmensch. Waar horen ze thuis? Zijn deze hedendaagse muralisten volbloed mestizo – en dus kunstenaar pur sang?
Buitenstebinnen? | MURAL schonk de kunstenaars zes propere leien. Binnen én buiten. Op straat én in huizen van cultuur. Dat theater en –cultuurhuizen de muralisten een podium bieden, toont dat ook zij actief nadenken over fundemantele vragen over hun eigen plek in de stad. Theater ontstond immers op straten en pleinen. Daar vonden hun verhalen weerklank. Met MURAL halen culturele instellingen de banden met de straattaal aan. Arenberg, wp Zimmer, DE Studio, KVS, t,arsenaal en KOP omarmen street art en geven de muralisten een plek tussen – en heel letterlijk ook op – hun muren. En de artiesten plooien zich in creatieve bochten om, net zoals Diego Rivera, in dialoog te gaan met de architectuur en functie van het gebouw – en gebruiken dankbaar de muren als hun canvas.
Kinky winky politics? | De kunstenaars leggen in de muurschilderingen hun ziel bloot. En ook de onze. Want geheel in de geest van Diego Rivera provoceren ze. En ze stellen kritische vragen. Dat is nu eenmaal wat street art doet: onze relatie met onze omgeving in vraag stellen. Street art is de kunst van een goedgeplaatste knipoog. Die knipoog kan opwindend zijn – of aanstootgevend. Maar je hebt ‘m gezien. En hij heeft de kracht om na te zinderen doorheen je hele lijf.
Praktisch | De muurschilderingen zijn permanent te bekijken tijdens de openingsuren van de deelnemende cultuurhuizen. I.h.k.v. het Mestizo Arts Festival kan je op 27, 28 en 29 oktober deelnemen aan een gegidste rondleiding. En daarna? Niemand die het weet. Het is een tentoonstelling met een onbeperkte houdbaarheidsdatum. De cultuurhuizen beslissen in alle vrijheid over het lot van de muurschilderingen.

Mural es una muestra que crea un diálogo entre obra de Diego Rivera y diferentes muralistas contemporaneos.
Los murales elegidos de Rivera se encuentran en diferentes edificios dialogando con ellos, con su función y su significado. Los artistas seleccionados para interpretar mediante una obra original sus murales trabajan habitualmente fuera, en el espacio público. Forman parte de un grupo heterogeneo de artistas al que habitualmente se trata de encerrar con conceptos difusos como street arts. Ellos trabajan con diferentes técnicas y motivaciones.
La idea de vincular una obra acógida por el canon de las bellas artes y el presente del muralismo trata de crear diversas líneas de reflección y diálogo:
Adentro y Afuera: Las interpretaciones de la obra de Diego se encuentran dentro de teatros y espacios mayormente destinados a las artes escénicas. El teatro nació como una manifestación artística en el espacio público con el paso de los años se retiró mayormente al espacio privado o semi público de las salas. Con su propia dinámica de relación con el público y con el afuera. Los artistas seleccionados trabajan mayormente en el espacio público con otras dinámicas. Así como Diego Rivera en su obra ellos realizaron un diálogo con el edificio su forma y su función. El proceso de selección de muros dentro de los teatros y su efectiva realización fueron una muestra de las tensiones entre dentro y fuera y las reglas de funcionamiento del espacio.
Bellas Artes vs Arte Nuevo: Diego Rivera y su obra son un referente del arte del siglo XX. Sus murales son considerados parte de nuestras bellas artes y han sido de gran importancia e impacto en las tradiciones posteriores. Los artistas seleccionados estan en mayor o menor medida desconectadosd el canon del arte contemporaneo. Existe un desarrollo y revalorizacion del los exponentes de este grupo. En los ultimos tiempo figuras mediaticas estimularon el necimiento de una mercado y de puentes.
Peso político o diálogo contextual: Diego Rivera es un ejemplo de artista comprometido con su época. Desde su militancia ideológica y su obra participa en su coyuntura política. Los artistas que trabajan en el espacio público se realcionan con la el uso y el significado del contexto donde trabajan.
En esta muestra tenemos trabajos individuales y colectivos. Tambien dos trabajos exteriores. Tambien contamos con el aporte de Mayra Romero y con la activa participacion de los teatros. En el marco de la muestra tendra lugar un brains (espacio de intercambio de saberes) en el marco de #MAF15DEMUUR donde los ejes de la muestra seran el punto de partida.
La muestra podrá ser visitada a partir del 16 de octubre de 2015 hasta que los teatros decidan uso para sus muros.

Contemporary artists find inspiration in the work of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera
Fine Arts or street gibberish? Diego Rivera is a cultural icon. His frescos and wall paintings are at the centre of 20th century art history and belong to the cultural canon of our day. The contemporary artists and muralists on the other hand, whose work can be found in back allies and abandoned buildings, often operate in the margin and create their art in the territory of urban wasteland. As if they’re struggling to find a place. They walk a thin line as they find themselves in a twilight zone: some attribute the devastating label !vandalism! to their work, while others – fashionable gallerists, quoi? – put their work on a golden pedestal. The artists blend the language of the streets with the discourse of the cultural elite. Where do they belong? Are these contemporary muralists full blood mestizo – hence, artists pur sang?
Interior-exterior? | MURAL provided the artists with six blank slates. Inside and outside. On the streets and inside cultural institutes. The fact that theatres en cultural centres offer these muralists a stage, shows that they too, are contemplating about their own role in the city. Theatre emerged as an oral form of street art, in streets and on squares. In MURAL theatres and cultural centres reconnect with the language of the street. Arenberg, wp Zimmer, DE Studio, KVS, t’arsenaal en KOP embrace the contemporary muralists and offer them a place within – and very literally also on – their walls. And the artists bend their boundaries actively and blend in creatively, to – just as Rivera did – constitute a dialogue between their work and the architecture and function of the buildings. They gratefully use the walls as their canvas.
Kinky winky politics? | The artists show their soul in their work. And they touch upon ours as well. Because they provoke, exactly as Diego Rivera would do. And they ask critical questions. That is one of the things street art does: it questions our relationship with our environment. One might claim that creating street art is very similar to a bold and audacious wink. That wink can cause a sensation of pleasant arousal – or, it can be quite shocking. But, whichever it is, one has seen it – and it has the power to resonate throughout your entire being.
Practical information? | The murals are on permanent display during the opening hours of the participating cultural institutes. During the Mestizo Arts Festival you can participate in a guided tour on October 27, 28 and 29. And afterwards? No one knows. The exhibition does not have an expiration date. All participating cultural institutes decide for themselves how long they will enjoy or tolerate the wall paintings.
