Enrique Noviello

For ten days, Enrique Noviello aka Kike was given free reign in a residence at MAP in Rataplan. A musician, producer and playwright, he set out to tell the story of a Polish worker from Gdansk, Lech Walesa, who caused a domino effect that changed the world profoundly.

During his research, Kike explored different art disciplines, engaged in conversation with other creators and delivered his story in a musical, performative and audio-visual tonal moment, followed by a short afterword. In the for the occasion “Polish bar,” you could have a drink afterwards with some more live music by El Juntacadáveres.

In 1980, a strike broke out at a shipyard in a port city north of Poland. That strike leads to a new union that questions the political structure of the then USSR. This small movement creates a gigantic snowball effect that will shake geopolitics and fundamentally change the world. In 1989, the Berlin Wall falls and other times break. Everything started with a worker from Poland … A man who sees everything differently and becomes a controversial figure himself.

Kike is a regular at MESTIZO ARTS PLATFORM (MAP). He has 2 bands: El Juntacadáveres (Argentine tango with hip-hop, electro, jazz and Latin) and Murga Armada (musical street band). He also made music for performances Amigos and Hannibal (t, arsenaal), Rumble in da Jungle (SINCOLLECTIEF, Arenberg, MAF, t,arsenaal), Sound of the city (Madam Fortuna), Mag ik een danske? (HETPALEIS) and Kamyon (KVS). With Junior Mthombeni he also composed a CD for the children’s book Verre Vrienden (by Michael De Cock/Gerda Dendooven).

MAP and Rataplan make space for research to bring new forms of theater, performance, dance and visual arts. The artists are fleshing out a theater house under new rules. The results are not recorded, nor is the audience experience, because that interaction is also part of this quest.
