Thassos and MESTIZO ARTS PLATFORM are once again joining forces to increase the distribution of #WIPCOOP-performances support! This year we are organizing the PROSPECTION day for programmers at wp Zimmer. Put in advance January 16 in your calendar and discover surprising new work within the performing arts.
The proper timing is something we’d like to finalize, but you’re in from 9:30 welcome, lunch is provided at 13:00 and we close the day at 16:00 (with a drink for the lovers :-)). During the day, you can enjoy three showcases of 30 minutes each: two in the morning and one in the afternoon. In between, inspiring artist talks and short pitches will take place.
Showcases + talks:
Elyne Notebaert – Tamayo Okano – Emiliano Cedillo
Talks & pitches:
Sefora Sam aka Sesa – Helena Elshout – Nela Deleu – Carla Parcianello – Anna Karenina Lambrechts – Right About Now – Marios Bellas
We briefly introduce the participating artists in advance:
SHOWCASE + TALK: Elyne Notebaert – MORE THAN (KNA)AP
Elyne Notebaert takes you on a humorous yet sharp and confrontational journey through her life as a woman with Achondroplasia (AP) – or, as a little woman.
SHOWCASE + TALK: Tamayo Okano – Care (Past/Present/Future)
Through her writing, Tamayo Okano explores the complex mother-daughter relationship, in which personal and universal themes resonate. Her performance attempts to reconcile different voices and experiences within herself.
SHOWCASE + TALK: Emiliano Cedillo – The Poverty of the Poor Makes the Wealth of the Rich
Emiliano Cedillo asks questions about identity and society. He combines juggling, acrobatics, artistic cycling and theater in this performance that will make you laugh, move you and make you reflect on the privileges in our society.
POETIC INTERLUDE + PITCH: Sefora Sam aka Sesa – (out)Growing Pains
Sefora Sam aka Sesa performs a poetic and musical piece about the energy left in your body after trauma. She explores how to become aware of that energy, realizing that healing is not an endpoint, but an ongoing journey.
PITCH: Helena Elshout – ERF
What do you carry with you from your ancestors? What do you pass on to the next generation? And how much influence do you have on this? ERF is a performance about motherhood and inheritance, where the intimate meets the political. Laura Vroom and Helena Elshout are on stage together in a play that balances between hilarious tragedy and wry humor.
PITCH: Nela Deleu – VLAMINGO (second season in booking at Thassos -> see brochure text)
VLAMINGO is a specific but recognizable love story that takes you to Sarajevo as well as to Bruges. It is a monologue in documentary form in which Nela Deleu reveals her path to becoming a Fleming.
VIDEO PITCH: Carla Parcianello – CAPRICCIOSA
Capricciosa (NL: fickle) means: unpredictable, unstable, impulsive – words often negatively attributed to little girls in Western society. In this solo project inspired by her momentary drawings, Carla creates a grotesque female portrait in which she explores her own personality flaws and redefines what it means to be a “good girl.
PITCH: Anna Karenina Lambrechts – From Gravity to Grace
Anna Karenina Lambrechts delves into the content and dance techniques of Krump – an energetic and expressive dance form in which raw and repressed emotions are expressed powerfully and non-violently. From Gravity to Grace is her search for what this style means to her in relation to her own Filipino roots, and an attempt to bring to the surface that which is buried, repressed or lost.
PITCH: RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. – KINGS
Leila is young, beautiful, smart … and dead. Murdered. The moving story about Leila is told in the theatrical performance KINGS told by a new generation of creators from RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. featuring a 2005 theatrical text by Djamel Bara that remains relevant after nearly 20 years. Ghent artist and actress Rabina Miya (WIPCOOP 2020) is part of the production and RIGHTABOUTNOW is a partner of MAP in Amsterdam.
PITCH: Marios Bellas – Four Walls
Four Walls is a hip-hop ritual that creates space for the anger, fear, mourning, celebration and hope that comes with the loss of an old world and the welcoming of an unknown future. Marios Bellas presents a musical mix of hip-hop mantras, slam choruses, screeching guitars, banging drums and freestyle prophecies.
