#WIPCOOP 2019“The ritual percussion puts us in a trance; with its power and elegance, the krump manages to expand our consciousness in multiple ways. Thus we discover the poetry of the soul, a kind of second state of being.”
For her new creation ARO ILÈ, Awoulath Alougbin conducted research around how certain ritual dances from Benin and the urban dance style Krump are connected. Because Krump has a lot of common ground with certain ritual dances from Benin, Awoulath wanted to know and understand the basis of this dance, and the atmosphere surrounding it. Awoulath Alougbin is a dancer and choreographer. After her years with the National Ballet of Benin, she founded her own dance company Compagnie AA. In her performances, she combines the essence of traditional Yoruba dance with contemporary dance.
