#WIPCOOP 2025
In Mencey Loco, Aday delves into the forgotten histories of his island, Tenerife. Inspired by La Cantata del Mencey Loco, the once-censored album by Los Sabandeños, he dances the story of the last revolt of the Guanches – the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands – against Spanish colonial rule. But the struggle is not over: Mencey Loco connects these historical echoes with contemporary challenges such as mass tourism and cultural alienation.
What begins as a personal journey grows into a universal story of resistance, lore and the power of identity in a globalized world.
Aday Morales (he/him) is a multidisciplinary dancer and maker from the Canary Islands who settled in Ghent shortly after the pandemic. With a background in hip-hop, krump and contemporary dance, he developed a unique movement style that combines storytelling, rhythm and social reflection. His work is informed by diverse influences – from rap culture to literature – and always departs from a profound search for identity, colonial legacies and the impact of globalization on local communities.
