Maria (Australia/Leuven) and Purni (UK/Antwerp) explore what is and is not allowed on stage. Can a woman say what she really thinks? Or only what the public likes to hear? In this loose adaptation of Lorca’s Yerma, they play with the idea of unsympathetic characters, outdated ideas and uncomfortable silences in the theater.

Maria Dafneros (b. 1978) graduated from the Adelaide Centre for Performing Arts in 2007 with an Advanced Diploma in Acting and the Minter Ellison Award for Excellence. Since moving to Belgium in 2008, she has performed regularly with Ontroerend Goed and Troubleyn, among others. In 2018, she created Witch Project Ether, a series of fragmented dialogues that blend scientific language with poetry – her first piece as a creator/choreographer.

Purni Morell (born 1972) is a freelance director, writer and translator in various forms, born in the United Kingdom. Before moving to Belgium in 2018, she was studio head at the National Theatre in London and artistic director of the Unicorn, where she directed The Velveteen Rabbit in the United Kingdom and the United States. For adults, she created work with Aproxima Arts, KVS Brussels and her own company, fieldwork. She is half Flemish and half Indian.
