[NL] In oktober wordt de studio van wpZimmer traditiegetrouw gereserveerd voor het Mestizo Arts Platform, dat voor het tweede jaar op rij het kunstenaarsduo Agustín Jais en Denise Lara Margules uitnodigt voor een residentie.
Water My Plant is een artistiek onderzoek naar verschillende vormen van culturele ecologie. Tijdens dat onderzoek willen Jais en Margules alternatieve institutionele relaties creëren tussen België en Argentinië. Ze maken maquettes op schaal van tien culturele organisaties en wisselen die uit, om experimentele samenwerkingen op gang te brengen tussen de leidinggevenden. De kunstenaars modereren deze uitwisselingen en documenteren het proces via verschillende media, gaande van video tot borduurwerk. Het resultaat van dit 16 maanden durende project gaat in wpZimmer in première als een performatieve installatie.
Agustín Jais (1985, Buenos Aires) is kunstenaar, curator, cultuurmanager, ontwerper en lesgever. Hij is mede-oprichter van de Club Cultural Matienzo, een onafhankelijke organisatie die een huis uitbaat voor kunst, cultuur en het gemeenschapsleven. Zijn artistieke praktijk ligt in het verlengde daarvan en neemt de vorm aan van contextgebonden projecten in samenwerking met anderen, die experimenteren met de dynamieken van instituties, community building en het collectieve her-aanleren van toegankelijke technologieën. Hij presenteerde zijn werk in Hamiffal (Jeruzalem), Centro Cultural Juan de Salazar (Asunción, Paraguay), Centro Cultural Parque España (Rosario, Argentinië), CETC-Teatro Colón, Espacio Telefónica en Centro Cultural San Martín (Buenos Aires, Argentinië). Hij nam deel aan residenties in New York, Mexico Stad en Antwerpen, en was gastspreker bij lezingen over collectieve initiatieven in de Beursschouwburg (Brussel), Hamiffal (Jeruzalem), Fundación PROA en Fundación Lebensohn (Buenos Aires). De artistieke praktijk van Denise Lara Margules (1989, Buenos Aires) bestaat uit documentairefilms en video’s, installaties uit borduursel en koken. Ze studeerde film aan de Universidad del Cine en volgde workshops bij Martín Rejtman, Andrés Di Tella en Matías Piñeiro (Universidad Di Tella), Juan Campanella en Werner Herzog (EICTV, Cuba). Tegelijk volgde ze een opleiding tot kok aan IAG, de school van Gato Gumas, en bij Pamela Villar, nadat ze al jaren kookte met haar vrouwelijke familieleden. Sinds 2014 leert ze borduren met Guillermina Baiguera. Haar kortfilms zijn gepresenteerd op BAFICI (14), MALBA, Festival Internacional de Cine de Cali (FICCALI) en Family Fiction Film Project (Portugal). [EN] An artistic research into cultural ecologies towards the creation of alternative institutional relations between Belgium and Argentina. 10 cultural organizations are linked through exchanging scale models of their buildings, that help trigger experimental collaborations between its managers. The artists moderate these exchanges while documenting the process in different media, from video to embroidery. The duo will premiere in Belgium the result of this 16-months project in wpZimmer as a performative installation.
Agustín Jais (1985, Buenos Aires) is an artist, curator, cultural manager, designer and professor. He is founder of Club Cultural Matienzo, an independent umbrella organization that runs a venue for the arts, culture and community life. His artistic practice is linked to this experience, taking form as context-based projects, developed mostly in collaboration, that experiment with institutional dynamics, community building and the collective re-learning of accessible technologies.
He has presented projects at Hamiffal (Jerusalem), Centro Cultural Juan de Salazar (Asunción, Paraguay), Centro Cultural Parque España (Rosario, Argentina), and CETC-Teatro Colón, Espacio Telefónica and Centro Cultural San Martín (Buenos Aires, Argentina). He participated in residencies in New York, Ciudad de Mexico and Antwerp, and was speaker about collective initiatives at Beursschouwburg (Bruselas), HaMiffal (Jerusalem), Fundación PROA and Fundación Lebensohn (Buenos Aires). Denise Lara Margules‘ (1989, Buenos Aires) artistic practice involves and intertwines the creation of documentary film and video, embroidery-based installations and cooking. She studied filmmaking at Universidad del Cine, and attended workshops by Martín Rejtman, Andrés Di Tella and Matías Piñeiro (Universidad Di Tella), Juan Campanella and Werner Herzog (EICTV, Cuba). At the same time and after years of cooking with her female relatives, she became a professional cook at IAG, Gato Dumas’ school and with Pamela Villar. Since 2014, she studies embroidery with Guillermina Baiguera.
Her short films were presented at BAFICI (14), MALBA, Festival Internacional de Cine de Cali (FICCALI) and Family Fiction Film Project, Portugal. In 2017, she was artist-in-residence at Casa Xitla, Ciudad de Mexico. Either jointly or separately exercised, Margules’ filmmaking, embroidery and cooking practices have always been inspired by family stories. She has a passion for working craftily on family archives: she believes these stories make up the only things she can know about assertively — mistrusting them at the same time as they come from second-hand sources. She has the feeling that this archaeology of found footage, though highly individual, interlaces through its repetition a universal history of families.
